Looking back over the year, I am very proud of what we have all been able to accomplish and a special thanks to all the District chairs and committees for collaborating and sharing new ideas and best practices to carry out the functions of a district.  I am very excited about Incoming District Governor Barbara Edwards starting her year tomorrow and for me to move to the role of Immediate Past District Governor.

Manton Martin

MANTON CAMP MARTIN '39 died peacefully on June 4th at home in Chappaqua, NY.  He was six months shy of his 100th birthday.

Born in NYC and raised in Rahway, NJ, he prepared for college at The Pingry School in Elizabeth, NJ.  He attended Princeton University, class of ’39, where he majored in Political Science. In his sixties, he began and received an M.B.A. from Pace University.

Following his Princeton graduation, he worked at Smith, Barney for two years. His Wall Street career, however, was interrupted by three years of service in the Army Air Corps.

In 1946 he joined a family firm that had been launched by his paternal grandfather in 1866. Under his eventual leadership, Martin Bros. Tobacco Co., Inc. became prominent in the fields of international marketing and export management. He was an officer of the company until his retirement in 1983.

Manton was appointed by two Secretaries of Commerce to the regional District Export Council, was a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; he was instrumental in founding the International Executives Association and NEXCO, the National Association of Export Management Companies. He was an active member of the New York Tobacco Table.

He was married to the late Anne Rheinhardt in 1943 and has two daughters, Susan Medley and the Rev. Carol Simpson, both of Colorado, as well as two grandchildren, Jennifer and Robert Simpson, and three great-grandchildren: Martin, Helyn and Benjamin. He is also survived by his second wife, Rosemarie Gift with whom he has happily shared his last 38 years.

Manton has been an active Freemason for over 50 years and a member of Rotary for over 45. He was the president of the Rotary Club of NY(City), '85-'86 and was recognized by his current club in Chappaqua in 2012 for his many service achievements.  Manton has also been active in a Church in each of the communities where he has resided after World War II, Ardsley, Edgemont and Chappaqua, all in NY, as well as in many activities, e.g., hospice volunteer, FISH driver Mount Kisco, A-HOME business manager and volunteer, etc., each offering the opportunity to practice Rotary's motto: Service above Self. Funeral service Monday 6/12 at Presbyterian Church, Mount Kisco. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations in Manton’s honor to the Rotary Foundation (https://www.rotary.org/) or to the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory. Ms. Chanel Gatewood-Brisborn

Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Chanel Gatewood-Brisborn, who died on January 24, 2017. She was the daughter of retired clergy, Rev. Clifton E. Gatewood.

Rev. Denise Smartt Sears told me “…she was the one who looked after me at the Bishop's Convocation way before childcare was provided. She spent the last decade or so caring for her Dad…making sure he was present at every clergy meeting and annual conference. They were both in different nursing homes when she passed away.”

The homegoing service for Sister Chanel was Monday, 1/30 at Mt. Calvary/St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, NY, NY. For more information on her scholarship fund, contact Rev. Harold Morris at 646-372-7540.

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.
