Club Meeting: Mats Ingemansson, Chairman of the Rotary Global History Fellowship Tomorrow is the 107th anniversary of Rotary International. Founded by Paul Harris in 1905, it today is an organization with 1.2 million members in 34,000 clubs all around the world. Rotary history buff (and our future District Governor for the Rotary year 2012-2014) Mats Ingemansson, who also is our District Governor Designee 2013-2014, will be telling us about the early years of Rotary International and the organization’s mile stones since. Club Meeting: Guest Speakers: Meet Rotary International’s New Generations World Rotaract Week [Mar 13 – Anniversary of Rotaract (1968)] 1) Melissa Casey, President 2011/2012 of the Rotaract Club at the United Nations Yesterday was the 45th anniversary of Rotaract. The Rotaract Club at the UN was founded in 1995 and many of our members have previously been members of RCUN. It is an outstanding a group of young professionals who either work or live in the greater NYC area and are interested in making a difference in our community. Our two clubs are partnering on several occasions. 2) A Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar The Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program, was founded in 1947. Since then, more than 40,000 men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is one of the world's largest privately funded international scholarships programs. Nearly 700 scholarships were awarded for study in 2009-10. Through grants totaling approximately US$16.2 million, recipients from about 70 countries studied in more than 80 nations. Today we will hear a foreign student who is currently studying in New York City. We meet 7:15pm for 7:30pm at Trattoria Dopo Teatro. 125 West 44th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues). Club Meeting: Brian Early, member of the Rotary Club at JFK Airport. 40 years of running on JFK airport! With the first race in April 1972 (until 2000 –when some of our members were already participating- it was a 10K), the 5K (3.2 miles) "Run on the Runway" race has become one of the major fund raisers for the JFK Rotary Club. Funds raised from the race are used to support scholarships, sponsor terminally ill children from countries with limited medical and technological services (for life-saving heart operations at local hospitals through Rotary's Gift of Life Program), and to sponsor annual Christmas parties for handicapped children from he local schools. Our friends Brian and Dennis will get us in the mood for April when our club we will run/walk again.
