Rotary District 7230 RLYA – Nov 9-11, 2007
District 7230 RLYA will be changing venues and seasons this year in order
to take full advantage of the parks and natural wilderness to achieve the
goal of bringing out leadership qualities through High Adventure.
We will base camp in a Nature Preserve in Ashokan NY (outside of
Kingston). There will be leadership skill training as well as High
Adventure. It will start on the on the bus ride to the base camp.
Introductions, expectations and housekeeping matters will be done on our way
to this adventure of a lifetime. Friday evening will be spent on trust
exercises, learning the importance and development of teams and seeing the
vision of what the weekend has to offer. We will talk about how each
individual can bring these experiences into their everyday life. Saturday
will start with a high adventure activity with sessions back at base camp in
the evening On Sunday after our adventure we will continue to utilize all of
our time together by de-briefing as to our growth and success of the weekend
on the ride back.
High School Sophomores and Juniors will be our target group with
representation from each club in the district.
Expert resources will be solicited from the District 7230 Rotary family
and from outside individuals available to us, not only to facilitate the
leadership conference but to inform our future (the youth of our
communities) of the resources and commitments of Rotary. We will work with
the group to understand that “Service above Self” is not only the motto of
Rotary but part of their everyday life.
Each club is responsible to find one student in their community who shows
leadership qualities. Look for the application on the web and in your
e-mails in early September. Any questions or suggestions please contact Sue
Donnelly at suedonnelly53@yahoo.com.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
From the ABC's of Rotary:
Each summer, thousands of young people are selected to attend
Rotary-sponsored leadership camps or seminars in the United States,
Australia, Canada, India, France, Argentina, Korea, and numerous other
countries. In an informal atmosphere, groups of outstanding young people in
the 14-30 age range spend a week in a challenging program of leadership
training, discussions, inspirational addresses, and social activities
designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills, and good
citizenship. The official name of this activity is the Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards program (RYLA), although these events are sometimes
referred to by other names, such as Camp Royal, Camp Enterprise, youth
leaders seminars, or youth conferences.
The RYLA program began in Australia in 1959, when young people throughout
the state of Queensland were selected to meet with Princess Alexandra, the
young cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. The Rotarians of Brisbane, who hosted
the participants, were impressed with the quality of the young people. It
was decided to bring youth leaders together each year for a week of social,
cultural, and educational activities. The RYLA program gradually grew
throughout all the Rotary districts of Australia and New Zealand. In 1971,
the RI Board adopted RYLA as an official program of Rotary International.
RYLA is generally conducted as a district activity.
