A life defined by selflessness, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to service, these qualities capture the essence of District Governor Garrett Capobianco, a proud lifelong resident of Scarsdale, New York. For over five decades, Garrett has embodied the spirit of “Service Above Self,” dedicating his personal and professional life to improving the lives of others.
Garrett’s journey in service began early through the Boy Scouts of America, where the values of community and compassion first took root. At just 18 years old, he joined the Scarsdale Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, launching what would become a lifelong devotion to public service. Over the course of 11 years, Garrett rose through the ranks, from Volunteer Membership Chair to Lieutenant, and ultimately Captain, leading with integrity and fostering a spirit of unity within his company.
After earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Banking and Finance from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University, Garrett embarked on a successful career in corporate banking. Yet, despite his early achievements in finance, his heart remained in service. In 1997, he followed his true calling and graduated from the Westchester County Career Fire Chiefs Firefighters Academy, returning to serve as a career firefighter in his hometown of Scarsdale.
Over his 21-year firefighting career, Garrett demonstrated extraordinary bravery, earning multiple Line of Duty Commendations for his actions. He held numerous leadership roles, including Union Secretary and later Union President of IAFF Local 1394, where he championed the welfare and safety of his fellow firefighters.
Garrett joined the Rotary Club of Scarsdale in 2015 and quickly became a cornerstone of the club. As Club President during the 2020–2021 Rotary year, he guided members through the challenges of the pandemic, ensuring connection and continuity by transitioning the club to virtual meetings. His outstanding leadership earned him recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow in 2021. Garrett continues to serve as President of the Scarsdale Rotary Foundation, a position he has held since 2021.
Beyond Rotary, Garrett’s dedication to lifelong learning and community health is evident in his certification as both a New York State Citizen Public Health Leader and a New York State Certified Emergency Medical Technician. He is also a charter member of one of only three Rotary International/Toastmasters International Clubs worldwide, serving as Sergeant-at-Arms since its founding in 2021.
Garrett’s life reflects Rotary’s highest ideals, leadership through action, compassion through service, and commitment through every season of life. Yet of all the titles he holds, none bring him more pride than being a devoted father to his two children, Christian and Victoria.
