More than 150 Rotarians, civic leaders, and guests gathered aboard a Skyline cruise on June 7, 2026 to celebrate the installation of Dr. Maksud Chowdhury as district governor of Rotary District 7230 for the 2026–2027 Rotary year. Dr. Chowdhury is the second Bangladeshi-American to serve as district governor of the district, marking a significant milestone in its history.
The ceremony welcomed nine Past District Governors, the Immediate Past District Governor, Assistant Governors, Rotary leaders, and community partners from across Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Westchester County, and Bermuda. Also in attendance were District 7255 (Long Island) Governor Rose Quaranta and her husband, Past District Governor Arnold Quaranta, reflecting the strong fellowship and collaboration between neighboring Rotary districts. In one of Rotary's most cherished traditions, the ceremonial gavel was passed hand-to-hand through the past district governors before being presented by District Governor Garrett to Dr. Chowdhury, symbolizing the continuity of Rotary leadership. Past District Governor McKinnis administered the oath of office.
An internationally recognized pediatrician and humanitarian, Dr. Chowdhury has dedicated his career to improving the lives of children and underserved communities through healthcare, education, and humanitarian service. As co-founder and president of PEDSI Global Health, he has led international medical missions, health education programs, CPR training initiatives, disaster relief efforts, and healthcare capacity-building projects in underserved communities worldwide. He also served as national president of the Bangladesh Medical Association of North America (BMANA), advancing healthcare collaboration and professional development across North America and Bangladesh.
As district governor, Dr. Chowdhury will lead 57 Rotary and Rotaract clubs with a focus on expanding literacy, improving maternal and child health, strengthening community partnerships, growing Rotary membership, and empowering the next generation of leaders.
"Rotary is more than a service organization—it is a global family united by a common purpose," said Dr. Chowdhury. "Together, we can create lasting impact by improving lives, strengthening communities, and building peace through service."
Following the official ceremony, guests enjoyed a cruise through New York Harbor with breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty, along with a luncheon and cultural performances by Rotary members and their families.
Rotary District 7230 represents one of the world's most diverse Rotary districts, serving Manhattan, The Bronx, Staten Island, Westchester County, and Bermuda. Under Dr. Chowdhury's leadership, the district aims to strengthen local communities
while advancing Rotary International's mission of Service Above Self through projects that promote health, education, peace, and sustainable development around the world.
