DECEMBER 2016 UPDATE

OUR DISTRICT

The year is ending on a high note after a month filled with so many festive Holiday celebrations and projects and more planned for 2017.  I really enjoyed the holiday events I was able to attend: Yonkers-East Yonkers End Polio Dinner, New Rochelle Holiday Auction & Dinner, Rotary Club of New York Celebration for Outgoing Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the Penn Club, Rye Rotary's Holiday Joint Lunch with Rye Lions  and the Port Chester/Rye Brook Rotary Club Graduation for the "Cooking From The Heart" Teenage Community Service Project led by Rotarian Chef Vinny Coakley. A lot is scheduled for January, including Area Meetings for the 4 areas in Westchester, that each have 6-7 clubs.

Please look for the special New Year issue of Club Happenings that Cecily Smith will issue this coming week and continue to send her your announcements, pictures, etc. for the District Facebook page. (Links stated below)

The picture this month reflects the dedication of two Rotarians, come rain or snow, illness or injury to show their support for club projects and events - District Membership Chair, Dave Schribman and Assistant Governor-Area 5, Mary Shackleton. Both attended the Port Chester/Rye Brook Rotary Club Graduation for "Cooking from the Heart".

From a governance perspective, there was a realignment of certain District Officer positions and I want to congratulate, Chinatown Past President, Taylor Eskew for assuming the role of District Foundation Chair for the period 2016-2019. Taylor quickly transitioned into the role and sent out the announcement to all Club Presidents of the commencement of the District Grant application period, which ends on Jan. 20, 2017. As Taylor stated, "We have money for your Rotary Community Project !!! Come and get it." (Remember generous donations from our District Rotarians made to the Rotary Foundation come back to the District in the form of District Grants that are available for community service projects.)

Additionally, all Club Presidents received the "Call for District 7230 District Governor and District Treasurer Candidates and District Nominating Committee Members". Applications are due by Jan. 14, 2017.

A Poem to reflect on as Rotarians as we start a New Year

IF, by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
    And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Best Wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Lora Hugelmeyer, District Governor 2016-17

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.
